Freaks and Geeks

Ok, with all the backpack robbery business, AIB has become a bit of a downer. Thanks for the concern from everyone, but its all fine now. On to some good stuff...
I finally got around to watching the much acclaimed Freaks and Geeks and I've been completely blown away. I have ripped through 5 discs and am just devastated that I only have 3 more episodes of this amazing show left to view. If you haven't seen this show, go rent or buy these DVDs asap.
The cast in this show is frighteningly good. Every one of these kids delivers remarkable performances. Its almost chilling to see how good they are in their screen tests (special features). The characters are also very well developed and unique. Watching the relationships and characters grow, even in the course of the all too brief run, is amazing.
Some of my favorite aspects of the show:
- Sam Levine as Neil. This kid is dynamite.
- Joe Flaherty as Mr. Weir. This guy is an SCTV alum and just dominates. The scene where he's wasted at Dr. Schweiber's party and laughing his ass off - solo style - at Neil's inappropriate jokes, is amazing.
- Gordon Krisp. That kid is gold too.
- Finally, I must mention the greatest casting decision EVER made. These geniuses gave the part of the high school gym teacher/sex ed instructor, Coach Ben Fredricks, to Thomas F. Wilson. Doesn't ring a bell? Thomas F. Wilson was Biff Tannen from the Back to the Future films. HOW F'N AWESOME IS THAT?!?
Seriously, go watch it.
I'm in Missouri until Saturday, so no CMJ posts from me. I am super bummed I missed what sounds like a f'n amazing Arcade Fire show. They covered "Queen Bitch"?!? Are you kidding me?! On a somewhat related sidenote, I grabbed the album from Seu Jorge, the guy that does Bowie covers on The Life Aquatic, f'n good stuff.

Fuck That Guy That Stole My Backpack
I hope you Google my name and find this you fucker. My name is in that bag. There's DVDs that say my name on it. You'll see my pictures on my camera and recognize me as the comedian that performed at the show - the show where you decided to steal some dude's backpack. I have to go buy new shit now before I head out of town tomorrow, I hope you're happy.
Or perhaps you just picked up my bag by mistake? If so, please email me!
UPDATE: An email from the thief...
Hi Aziz,
I'm the fucker that stole your backpack. You have some cool stuff. First off, the iPod. You have a lot of music! This 40 GB model is almost stuffed. I love all those bummer playlists you made, good stuff.
I was looking through your camera too. I'm glad you decided to upgrade to the 1 GB SanDisk card, thats gonna be real handy for me. Also, the Bumbershoot Festival looks like it was a lot of fun.
Haha, I just found the Bod Really Ripped Abs. Thats so awesome! I heard you do the bit at the show, but I didn't realize you actually bought that product. Well, at least that won't be too expensive to replace.
I also watched the Shutterbugs Episode 1 and 2 DVD. Those are hilarious! When are you and Rob filming Episode 3? Can't wait to see it.
Take it easy,
- Backpack Thief
UPDATE: Obviouisly, that's not a real email. I'm just really pissed about losing my backpack. DAMNIT! Is this because I did that joke about God hating me? Touche, omniscent one. Touche.

BV's Pre-CMJ Show a Blast.. Backpack Stolen?
The Pre-CMJ show that Brooklyn Vegan put together was a blast. Dave Deporis, Doveman, and Cloud Cult were all great. Cloud Cult especially blew me away. I'll try to post some links to their stuff later, its really great stuff.
Now, on to shitty news. My backpack is gone! I left my little black Jansport backpack near the bar and when I went back to claim it, it was gone. Its a real huge nuisance, but not too awful. Ok now that I'm thinking about what I've potentially lost, this is really shitty.
iPod? Gone. (Right before I head out of town no less!)
Digital Camera? Gone. (So long memories from Bumbershoot that never got uploaded into iPhoto.)
Copy of David Sedaris' Me Talk Pretty One Day? Adios. (So much for reading the rest of that on the plane to Missouri...)
Tape of standup from some dude who wanted to get booked on Crash Test? See ya. (Sorry about that guy, I didn't get a chance to watch it, drop off another copy if you can. Thats some bad luck, though not as quite as bad as mine apparently.)
Bottle of Bod "Really Ripped Abs" Body Spray I've been using for bits at the Best Week Ever shows? Lost. Forever. (Shit, I can't believe I'm gonna have to purchase that garbage again!)
Argh. I find it hard to believe someone at that show would actually steal a backpack for no reason. If anyone has any clues to its whereabouts, please let me know. Hopefully there was a mixup or something.
Other than the iPod and camera, what a random kaboodle you would have made off with though. Enjoy your "Really Ripped Abs" possible thief.

The Most Anticipated Comedy... Ever?
Those that know me well are familiar with my love for the greatest video of all time - Mr. T's Be Somebody or Be Somebody's Fool. Its basically an after school special from the 80s where T teaches kids valuable lessons on 'frustration,' 'styling,' and 'recouping,' as well as classic segments about treating your mother right and breakdancing. I've gushed about it in many posts on here.
Well someone at TV Land is a f'n genius. They are going to develop a new show called I Pity the Fool where T is going to go around the country and 'help people with their problems.' My God.
Check Stereogum for more details.

Crash Test Recap... Pre-CMJ Show TONIGHT!
Last night's Hurricane Fundraiser show was a blast. Much thanks to special drop-in Mike Birbiglia, guest co-host Leo Allen, and to our excellent comics - Andy Blitz, Christian Finnegan, Eugene Mirman, and Demetri Martin.
I'm too lazy to really recap the show, but it was much fun. Some C-Test regular should start a weekly recap or smoething. Though I dunno if anyone gives a shit about the recaps anyway. Haha. I'm lazy and busy, a bad combo when it comes to gathering motivation to writing recaps of shows you did the night before.
Anyway, tonight is the big Pre-CMJ throwdown at Tonic with Cloud Cult, Doveman, and David Deporis. I'll be doing two 10 minute sets in between the bands at some pt. BV is also donating part of the proceeds to Hurricane Relief efforts. Get yer tickets!

C-Test Tomorrow!
The benefit should be great tomorrow. We have like 220+ reservations and should raise some good money for the Hurricane Relief efforts. Thanks to all those that made reservations and are coming down. If you didn't get a reservation, there may be some standby tickets available at UCB if you show up early.
On a side note, unfortunately my camera wizard Jason Woliner and I were unable to meet up to film the infamous "worst mixtape" walk through. Hopefully we can film it for next week's edition of the 'Test.
Also, "Shutterbugs" fans rejoice, Huebel and I have started laying out the script for Episode 3 and we should finish production in time for Channel 102's screening on the 26th. Huebel's been bopping around to LA and stuff, so its going to be tough, but like I always say - "don't underestimate the 'Bugs." And if that wasn't enough -- my pal Paul Scheer and I are laying the groundwork for a separate short film project that will be really awesome. I don't want to say too much, but lets just say it involves fucking with your mind!
